Stellar Staff July – Tara Blair

For nearly two decades, Tara Blair has quietly, but powerfully, made a difference in the lives of children and families in Southeast Alaska. This July, her dedication, warmth, and unwavering commitment have earned her the well-deserved title of Stellar Staff—a fitting recognition for someone who has devoted her career to showing up for others, especially when it matters most.

Tara’s journey with Community Connections began in 2009, shortly after her work with COHO (Communities Organized for Health Options) concluded at Thorne Bay School. Since then, she has worn many hats within the organization—from classroom support to nearly a decade providing Therapeutic Foster Care. Most recently, she returned to support staff work, drawn back by her love for connecting directly with youth.

“She supports our Core Values every day in her work with clients, community members and staff,” said her supervisor, Denise. “She is always willing to step up and do what is needed. She was a Service Coordinator years ago and then moved to being a Therapeutic Foster Parent—now she has returned to us as a SSIII and we couldn’t be happier!”

When asked what she loves most about her role in the Children’s Mental Health Program, Tara doesn’t hesitate: “Working with the children. Just being there to help support them in their successes and failures.” Whether it’s a smile during a great day or a quiet presence during the hard ones, Tara believes consistency and a listening ear are some of the most powerful tools she can offer. “It’s easy if you love it,” she says with genuine warmth.

Of course, the work isn’t without its challenges. The hardest part for Tara is when she can’t change a child’s environment or circumstances—but even then, she shows up. “I just do the best I can to support them in any way I can. Always letting them know I am here for them.”

Off the clock, Tara finds joy in life’s simple pleasures—family dinners, game nights, crafting, working in the yard, and fishing. Her favorite moments? The sparkle in her grandkids’ eyes, the wag of her dogs’ tails, and, of course, those hard-earned bragging rights for catching the biggest fish. “It all just makes my heart full,” she says.

Tara grew up in Brookings, Oregon, where childhood summers were spent camping by the Chetco River, swimming in its clear blue waters, and savoring the freedom of youth. Though she now calls Alaska home, she fondly recalls those days and the family ties that shaped her.

Tara has a heart of dedication and resilience. Community Connections is lucky to have her—and the children she supports are even luckier.

Thank you, Tara, for your continued dedication to community connections, the children and the families of our communities!
