Stellar Staff – James

James coordinates mental health services for children and families on Prince of Wales Island.

This month’s Stellar Staff is James England.

James traveled to Prince of Wales Island for the first time in 2019 to visit his uncle for a hunting trip. He loved the landscape and access to nature, so when a position with Community Connections in Craig became available, he decided to grasp the opportunity!

James started with the Children’s Mental Health Program as a Support Specialist in July 2020 and quickly transitioned to a Service Coordinator position. He works with children experiencing mental health or behavioral challenges and their families to provide individualized support needs.

Before moving to Alaska, James worked with children with special needs in Virginia and fell in love with the fulfilling work.

This is still the highlight of the job for James, working directly with kids to provide the support they need to succeed. James has been impressed by the services Community Connections is able to provide in such a remote place, as well as the support system within the community. He noted, “it’s beyond what I’ve ever seen.”

When not working, James enjoys doing “anything outside” – hunting, fishing, trapping and hiking every day!

Thanks James, for all you do to support children on POW!

We feature staff as part of our monthly Stellar Staff Spotlight. The spotlight rotates between programs (Children’s Mental Health, Early Learning, and Senior & Disability Services), and between Ketchikan and Prince of Wales, with a focus on recognizing direct service staff.
